One of the Three Tensions
Presence vs Pace
Being here vs. Building something. The moment in front of you vs. the momentum underneath you.
What is the Presence vs Pace tension?
Presence vs Pace is one of three tensions measured by the Zombie Score assessment. It is not a test you pass. Both poles are legitimate, and most people lean one way without ever choosing to. Presence and Pace each come with a real gift and a real cost — the useful question is not which is better, but whether the lean you have is the one you would pick on purpose this season.
What Presence gives you
The people around you feel you. Not just see you — feel you. When you're in a room, you're actually in it. That's rarer than you think, and the people who love you can tell the difference.
What Presence costs you
Being fully here is beautiful — until it means the things that require sustained momentum never get built. Presence without pace can become a way of avoiding the hard, unglamorous work of building something that lasts.
What Pace gives you
You're building something real. The career, the stability, the future — it doesn't happen by accident. Your drive creates opportunity and security for the people you love, even when they can't see the work behind it.
What Pace costs you
Pace is powerful — until the running becomes the reason. The danger isn't that you're going fast. It's that you've been going fast so long you've forgotten what it feels like to stop. And the people beside you have stopped asking you to.

The other two tensions
- Balcony ↔ Dance Floor — Seeing the system from above vs. Feeling it from inside. The aerial view vs. the lived experience.
- Margin ↔ Momentum — Space for surprise vs. The engine that compounds. The garden vs. the treadmill when it's working.
